How does the surveillance of the oceans known as Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA) contribute to ocean governance? This was the core question that SafeSeas director Christian Bueger discussed in a recent talk at the MARIPOLDATA Ocean Seminar Series organized by the University of Vienna.
Drawing on research on maritime domain awareness in the Western Indian Ocean and Southeast Asia, in particular a recent paper on the promises of MDA, Bueger highlighted the promises and pitfalls of information sharing and surveillance. The speaker series is organized by the ERC funded research project MARIPOLDATA that studies the power and influence of marine biodiversity data on ocean governance.
