Goods including cigarettes, alcohol, foodstuffs, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, electronics, and clothing and fashion accessories are frequently smuggled by sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Counterfeit smuggling takes a number of forms. The first is the concealing of finished products, either physically in ship cargos or by mislabelling of shipments through false paperwork.<span id='easy-footnote-1-45' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.safeseas.net\/evidence\/2020\/02\/10\/counterfeits-smuggling\/#easy-footnote-bottom-1-45' title='&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/gov\/misuse-of-containerized-maritime-shipping-in-the-global-trade-of-counterfeits-e39d8939-en.htm&quot;&gt;OECD 2021&lt;\/a&gt;; &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.taylorfrancis.com\/chapters\/edit\/10.4324\/9781315866673-5\/smuggling-mobilities-craig-martin&quot;&gt;Martin 2015&lt;\/a&gt;; &lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12198-013-0118-y&quot;&gt;Basu 2016&lt;\/a&gt;'><sup>1<\/sup><\/a><\/span> Goods may be mislabelled <del>,<\/del> or the names of legitimate import companies used to create a veneer of legitimacy. Many estimates depend on extrapolating from seizures to approximate volumes and the value of the trade. Based on these calculations, the OECD and EU IPO put the estimate of imports of counterfeit (and pirated goods) to be USD $509 billion, or 3.3 per cent of total global trade in 2016.<span id='easy-footnote-16-45' class='easy-footnote-margin-adjust'><\/span><span class='easy-footnote'><a href='https:\/\/www.safeseas.net\/evidence\/2020\/02\/10\/counterfeits-smuggling\/#easy-footnote-bottom-16-45' title='&lt;a href=&quot;https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/corruption-integrity\/reports\/trends-in-trade-in-counterfeit-and-pirated-goods-g2g9f533-en.html&quot;&gt;OECD &amp;amp; EU IPO 2019&lt;\/a&gt;'><sup>16<\/sup><\/a><\/span>. In the EU, imports of counterfeit and pirated goods reached EUR 119 billion in 2019, representing 5.8 per cent of all goods entering the EU[\/efn_note]<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europol.europa.eu\/publications-events\/publications\/intellectual-property-crime-threat-assessment-2022\">EUIPO and Europol 2022<\/a>[\/efn_note] Both estimates use customs seizure data to extrapolate these figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:16px\">Counterfeits appear to be one of the most commonly smuggled illicit goods.
